Internet sensation Grumpy Cat, who inspired countless memes thanks to her unimpressed expression, has passed away aged 7.
Feline superstar Grumpy Cat, who found internet fame after her picture was posted onto Reddit in September 2012, has passed away aged 7 after suffering from a urinary tract infection that was ‘too tough to overcome’.
Better know by her owners as Tardar Sauce, Grumpy Cat inspired a legion of memes thanks to her trademark scowl and quickly became the internets most famous cat with a following of 2.4 million fans on Instagram.
News of her passing was shared with her followers on Instagram alongside the caption: “Some days are grumpier than others.”
Tardar Sauce, or ‘Tard’ as she was affectionately known by her owner, Tabatha Bundesen, passed away at her home in Phoenix, Arizona, on Tuesday morning in Tabatha’s arms following complications from a urinary tract infection.
In a statement shared on social media, Grumpy’s family wrote: “Despite care from top professionals, as well as from her very loving family, Grumpy encountered complications from a recent urinary tract infection that unfortunately became too tough for her to overcome.
“Besides being our baby and a cherished memory of the family, Grumpy Cat has helped millions of people smile all around the world – even when times were tough.
Speaking to the Guardian, Grumpy Cat’s manager, Ben Lashes, said that Grumpy Cat: “loved her many fans in the UK”.
“She was lucky enough to travel there for the unveiling of her Madame Tussauds wax figure, a signing at HMV Oxford, a buyers’ showcase for Primark, and a private visit to Abbey Road studios. Grumpy will forever be the queen of cats.”
