Plant-based startup THIS has unveiled a vegan alternative to bacon that it claims can “fool carnivores”.

The company is making realistic mock meats that closely mimic the taste and texture of their animal-derived counterparts, and is launching vegan bacon (£2.95) from soy and pea protein in Holland & Barrett chillers.

Not only is the brand rolling out vegan bacon onto the high-street, it’s also launching two chicken alternatives – ready-to-cook sea salt & black pepper pieces (£4.55) and snack-ready tikka pieces (£2.95) into Holland & Barrett stores at the same time.

The rest of THIS’s range is comprised of a selection of ready-to-cook pieces, soy & garlic pieces, breaded goujons and rosemary breaded goujons (£4.55), as well as ready-to-eat barbecue pieces and rotisserie pieces (£2.95).

Not only are the products all completely plant-based, but they’re also all fortified with vitamin B12 and iron too.

THIS was founded two years ago by former restaurateur duo Andy Shovel and Pete Sharman founded who have partnered with texture scientists and flavourists to create plant-based products it hopes will offer something different to current plant-based products on the market.

According to the brand, they created the range to appeal to meat-eaters who “just don’t like squishy tofu”.

Speaking to The Grocer, Shovel said: “Our acid test for all our products is that they must be able to fool meat eaters. That’s why we’ve spent so long developing the recipes. We’re divorcing ourselves from tofu and traditional vegan foods to create something meat eaters will love.”

THIS vegan bacon will launch in Holland & Barrett chillers and Patty & Bun restaurants in the first week of June.
