Wondering what to buy for your next BBQ night? We’ve been busy tasting some old classics plus new supermarket offerings this month, so you can choose wisely! Check out which ones we rated the most…
Asian Spiced Burgers
Fry’s, available at Ocado| £3.65 for four
If you fancy trying something a bit different, these delicately-spiced, slightly zingy patties are worth a go. They’re a bit like Marmite – some of us loved them whilst others found them too artificial. They’re thinner than some of the burgers we tested, but go great with a good dollop of chutney and some salad. Give them a whirl and make your own mind up…
Asda, Tesco and Holland & Barrett | From £3.49 for a pack of two
We were excited to try these brand new burgers from Swedish brand Oumph!, and they didn’t disappoint! The same size as quarter pounders, they’re nice and large and lovely and juicy too. The beetroot gives them a deep red colour whilst the flavour is equally realistic. A new favourite!
The Meatless Farm Co, Sainsbury’s, Morrisons and Co-op | £2.50 for two
Made with soya, rice and pea proteins, these dense burgers have a realistic look and texture and a good, meaty flavour. They taste best when fried or grilled on the BBQ – oven cooking dried them out a little. A great product for the price.
Beyond Meat, available at Tesco | £4.99 for 400g
If you haven’t yet tried these much-talked about patties then you really should – they’re still some of the best on the market if you miss meat. Perfect for impressing non-vegan friends at your next BBQ, these soft pink burgers even have a meaty smell and some would say are almost too realistic.
‘Pulled Pork’ ¼lb Burgers
Linda McCartney available at most major supermarkets | £2 for two
These are thick, juicy and delicious with a rich, smoky BBQ flavour. Not too thin, they fill up a bun nicely and stay moist. With the texture of pulled pork, they’re realistic too and left the kids asking for more.
Vivera, available at Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons | From £2.50 for two
We liked these spiced patties but they might not be for everyone – they’re flavoured with cumin, turmeric, chilli, paprika and turmeric, so if you’re not a fan of heavy seasoning maybe go for one of the other options. We loved the fact they’re a bit different though, with a distinct flavour that’s slightly less meaty.
