With the growth in veganism showing no signs of slowing down, it was no surprise to see that ASK Italian had launched its very own vegan menu in 2017, complete with vegan mozzarella!
Celebrating the fresh flavours of summer, the Italian eatery has just added some delicious new options to the menu that we were lucky enough to try at the Bath branch earlier this month.
We started off the meal by ordering a selection of colourful and fruity drinks from the comprehensive drinks menu that includes refreshing tipples such as a Strawberry G&T served with rosemary (which one of us particularly enjoyed!), Strawberry Mojito and a Pink Smash made with prosecco and pink gin and garnished with an edible flower. For those avoiding booze, there are some delightfully juicy options like the Soft Tropical Nojito.
Whilst waiting for your meal you can choose from a tasty selection of starters, bread and nibbles to munch on. We opted for the Spicy Nibbles which is a crunchy mix of chickpeas, peas, giant corn and broad beans that is very moreish and impossible to stop snacking on!
The eatery has added a new starter to the vegan menu this season in the form of a Super Green Soup which is a light vegetable broth with peas, courgettes, leeks, baby kale and potatoes, topped with pea shoots.
For our main course, we opted to try the brand new Super Green Pizza and the Mediterranean Salad. The pizza features a pea purée base topped with tender baby kale, asparagus, peas, red pepper pearls, spinach, balsamic red onions and vegan mozzarella cheese. We found this pizza to be such a lovely, fresh take on traditional pizza and the vibrant pea purée sauce atop the base coupled with the sweet red pepper pearls makes it a perfect addition to the menu for summer.
What we really enjoyed was the fact that the vegan mozzarella wasn’t the star of the show but instead allowed the flavours of the toppings and the quality of the base to take centre stage. Instead of having a strong coconut flavour and a sticky texture that coats your mouth we were pleasantly surprised to see that ASK’s vegan mozzarella alternative, which we were told is their own special creation, was more akin to a cheese sauce which works really well on a pizza.
If you’re looking for a very virtuous salad then the Mediterranean Salad might not be for you because it comes topped with a generous helping of crostinis smothered in balsamic onion and vegan mozzarella – and we loved it!
The salad is made up of tender baby kale, cos lettuce, artichokes, plum tomatoes and red pepper pearls, tossed in a sweet mustard dressing. As with the pizza, we thoroughly enjoyed the fact the mozzarella was smooth and creamy rather than gooey and sticky and the sweet yet tart balsamic onions were the perfect marriage.
There’s even a menu for children complete with sides, drinks and desserts where you can customise your own pizza, as well as spaghetti and a vegan ice-lolly.
The high-street restaurant chain currently boasts 120 locations around the UK, which means it’s now even easier to get your vegan pizza fix!
