How does an air fryer work?

True to its name, an air fryer cooks food by constantly circulating hot air.

The top of an air fryer is fitted with a controllable heating element, once on a large fan inside the air fryer blows hot air which rapidly cooks the food making it crispy on the outside and soft in the centre.

Air fryers cook food far quicker and more evenly than a standard oven, making them more convenient and cost-effective. There are so many tasty vegan air fryer recipes to make healthy, budget cooking a breeze.

Foods traditionally cooked in oil like chips, falafels, and even vegan doughnuts can be cooked in an air fryer without requiring litres of oil.

Although, foods coated in a liquid batter cannot be cooked in an air fryer.

What are the health benefits of an air fryer?

Thanks to requiring little to no oil, air frying food can help reduce your oil intake and in turn, significantly reduce the number of calories and fat1 in a meal.

Additionally, evidence suggests that air-frying foods can reduce a carcinogen chemical substance called acrylamide by about 90%2.

Acrylamide is formed when starchy foods such as potatoes are cooked at a high temperature.

Is it cheaper to run an air fryer than an oven?

As the cost-of-living crisis continues to worsen, people are favouring cheaper cooking alternatives to help cut their bills.

Thanks to the air fryer’s rapid cooking time, it uses less energy than a standard oven making it an efficient cooking appliance.

To compare, a typical air fryer uses an average of 1.4Kwh (kilowatts per hour), whereas a standard electric oven uses an average of 2.1 kWh.
