Zac Efron has revealed that he has ditched veganism, saying he has reintroduced animal products into his diet as his ‘body wasn’t processing the vegetables in the right way’.
The 34-year-old actor, who followed a plant-based diet for around two years, was inspired to ditch animal products by his Down to Earth co-host Darin Olien.
But now he says he has reintroduced products like meat back into his diet, including offal such as liver.
The u-turn may surprise some fans, as Zac had spoken out very positively about the lifestyle in the past.
In a 2018 interview with Teen Vogue, he said: “[It’s] completely changed the way that my body works, and the way that I metabolise food, the way it turns into energy, the way that I sleep.
“It’s been great for my exercise, and great for my routine.”

However in his recent interview with Men’s Health, he said: “I started intermittent fasting just after I stopped being vegan. My body wasn’t processing the vegetables in the right way.
“So, I decided to stop it and try something new. Intermittent fasting has been really helpful with that.”
He outlined his diet to the outlet, saying he eats twice a day, and consumes food like bone broths and proteins including elk and chicken. He only appears to eat small portions of carbohydrates, listing quinoa and sweet potato among them.
His new diet is likely to dismay his vegan followers, however, he noted that he believes eschewing animal products is preferably ethically.
He said: “Morally, of course, I still wish I was vegan.”
The actor joins a clutch of other vegan celebrities who once promoted a vegan lifestyle but have since reintroduced animal foods, including Miley Cyrus, Anne Hathaway, and Samuel L. Jackson.
