Vegan smoked salmon slices are set to launch in Waitrose and Sainsbury’s stores across the UK next month, alongside a new plant-based tuna alternative.
The new slices are said to be perfect in bagels, served with a lemon wedge as a light starter, or layered on blinis as a canapé.
Meanwhile, the tuna has been created to replicate both the flavour and taste of its traditional fishy counterpart, made from textured wheat protein.
Created by Squeaky Bean, the Beechwood Smoked Salmon Style Slices (80g) will launch in Waitrose from September 20 and Sainsbury’s from September 27, with an RRP of £3.50. The Tuna Style Flakes will launch in Sainsbury’s from September 27.
According to the brand, the new slices ‘are as sophisticated as smoked salmon; with the same silky-smooth texture and smokiness of flavour’, despite being 100 per cent vegan.
It says they are ‘a source of fibre, naturally low in saturated fat and only 68 kcals per 100g, perfect for meat eaters, meat reducers, flexitarians, vegans and vegetarians alike’.

Vegan smoked salmon and tuna
In a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, Rebecca Youseman, Brand Manager, Squeaky Bean, said: “20 per cent of vegans and vegetarians told us they miss eating salmon, so we’ve been working on bringing vegan smoked salmon to the market.
“It’s been a long time coming but it’s finally here; Squeaky Bean Smoked Salmon Style Slices are 100 per cent plant based, smoked in beechwood for the same richness of flavour and naturally lower in fat, saturated fat and salt than smoked salmon.”
Speaking to the Grocer about the new products, she added: “With there being very little innovation in plant-based fish to date, we’re proud to lead the way by launching a great-tasting vegan tuna alternative and what will be the first vegan smoked salmon style slices to be available in major retailers.”
The vegan smoked salmon slices and the tuna flakes join its current portfolio of meat-free items, including its ready-to-eat Cooking Chorizo Style Sausage, Chargrilled Steak Style Strips and award-winning Applewood Smoked Ham Style Slices.
Squeaky Bean’s product line-up also includes Chicken Style Pieces, Chargrilled Mini Fillets and Sandwich Slices; NYC Deli Pastrami, Spanish Chorizo and Salami Style Slices.
