Down the Hatch is a veggie dream – serving up juicy burgers, deep fried delights and decadent puddings.
Down the Hatch has applied the junk food gimmick of its meaty competitors to vegan food, with incredible results that proves veggies and vegans can do everything meat-eaters can do (but better!).
Tucked away below street level, this Duke Street eatery has quickly become a cult hit with Liverpool’s vegetarians and vegans in the three months since it opened. Started by a friends Jay and Conrad, who have years of shared experience in the service industry, the restaurant is run by people who genuinely care about creating the most indulgent junk food concoctions for their diners.
The owners originally wanted the venue to be a cocktail bar, but after going veggie they realised there wasn’t anywhere to have non-healthy veggie food and they decided to combine the ideas and serve up proper home cooked food but with a junk food twist to create a place you’ll probably need a nap after visiting.
What’s on the menu?
The menu leaves diners absolutely spoilt for choice, with burgers, vegan chicken’ and stacked nachos all on offer.
Highlights include the “Satan’s zinger” burger which is made with a spicy seitan fillet, “howl at the moon” hot sauce and a generous lashing of fries. The “big junk” sharers are also mouth-wateringly good, especially the bumper “bucket ‘o’ veg” filled with deep fried veg and seitan served with coleslaw and a cob.As well as burgers and junk food classics, the menu also offers home cooked favourites, like lasagne, mac and cheese and Thai green curry.
Diners can also choose whether they want to see the vegetarian menu or a vegan menu.
