According to reports, nostalgic lunchbox item Babybel will be launched in a dairy-free version in US supermarkets next year.

French cheese giant Bel Group aims to go beyond just Babybel, releasing a plant-based version of Boursin soft cheese available to purchase on Amazon Fresh by the end of this month.

It also plans to launch a vegan offering for each of its core brands, which also includes The Laughing Cow, with the intention to introduce a new international brand dedicated to vegan products.

The company had previously made a commitment to becoming a more sustainable and healthy brand in a statement last October, introducing its new signature: “For All. For Good.” Therefore, the plans to branch out into the dairy-free market may come as no surprise to some.

“Five generations into its history, our company has reached a milestone,” Antoine Fievet, Chairman and CEO of the Bel Group, said in a statement.

“We are today confronted with the challenge of feeding a growing world population, while preserving our planet’s resources. The food business model that we all know is obsolete. It’s time to open the road to healthier and responsible food for all. And we food manufacturers must provide real answers.”

The Bel Group’s desire to delve into the plant-based market can only be a positive thing, and we hope that they bring their vegan cheese to the UK soon after!
