Joaquin Phoenix and fiancée Rooney Mara welcomed their first child together a month ago according to a friend of the couple.

In a touching tribute to Joaquin’s late brother who died in 1993, the couple has reportedly named their son River.

News of the birth was revealed by director Victor Kossakovsky who revealed the news at the 2020 Zurich film festival after a screening of the black-and-white documentary Gunda on which Joaquin served as an executive producer.

Asked about Phoenix’s involvement in the film and apologising for his absence at the screening, Kossakovsky said: “He just got a baby, by the way, his name was… a beautiful son called River, so he cannot promote [the film] right now.”

Joaquin recently opened up about River’s legacy in a rare interview with Anderson Cooper for 60 Minutes. Speaking about his brother, Joaquin said: “I feel like in virtually every movie that I made, there was a connection to River in some way. And I think that we’ve all felt his presence and guidance in our lives in numerous ways.”

Whilst Rooney and Joaquin may now live happily in the Hollywood Hills with their two dogs Soda and Oskar, Joaquin told Vanity Fair last October that he thought she ‘despised’ him the first time they met on the set of Her in 2013.

Now the couple, who have since gone on to star in several films together, including 2018’s Mary Magdalene, are passionate animal advocates who are regularly seen rescuing animals and attending vigils and demonstrations urging the public to go vegan.

In April they spoke out about factory farming and its correlation to the COVID-19 outbreak and in May they partnered with Beyond Meat as part of its Feed A Million+ pledge.
