The world's largest vegan restaurant guide HappyCow has released its Top 10 Vegan Cities list for the first time since the pandemic

To mark World Vegan Month, HappyCow has released its annual report on the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Cities in the World.

The list is determined using metrics such as the number of fully vegan restaurants within a 10 km radius from each city centre, the number of fully vegan businesses in that radius, the density of vegan businesses per capita, the growth of vegan businesses since their last report and how active the vegan community is.

Topping HappyCow’s list for the fourth report in a row is London, with 200+ fully vegan restaurants and 2,000+ businesses in total listed on HappyCow within a 10km radius of the city centre.

London is no. 1 for vegans

Here are the Top 10 Vegan-friendly Cities in order:

1. London
2. Berlin
3. New York City
4. Melbourne
5. Singapore
6. Los Angeles
7. Bangkok
8. Amsterdam
9. Warsaw
10. Barcelona

Vegan restaurants cropping up at a faster rate

This is Happy Cow’s first report in three years, with the pandemic altering the look of the vegan restaurant scene in some cities across the globe.

Four new cities were added to the list this year – Melbourne, Singapore, Amsterdam, and Barcelona, replacing Toronto, Portland, Tel Aviv, and Prague.

Bangkok, Los Angeles and Warsaw remain.

Amsterdam made its way to the eighth spot with a 78% growth of vegan businesses across the city over a span of three years. Warsaw, being a city where veganism has consistently had an edge over vegetarianism, is back on the list at ninth place.

Barcelona caps the list at tenth place due to the 74% growth of veganism, which comes as a pleasant surprise considering Spain’s reputation for a meat-heavy cuisine.

HappyCow founder Eric Brent said: “After a major drop in 2019-2021, the growth of vegan restaurants worldwide continues again at an even faster rate than we experienced in 2019.

“I’m happy to see veganism boom, attracting more plant-forward people and businesses across the world to grow the movement together!”
