The UK’s first vegan BBQ joint has just opened in Essex

The first all-vegan BBQ restaurant outside of the USA has just opened in Westcliff-on-Sea in Essex

Westcliff-on-Sea is now home to the UK’s first all-vegan BBQ joint as Stoked Vegan BBQ has just opened its doors in the seaside town.

Stoked started life as a pop-up selling its tasty vegan BBQ dishes at festivals around the country but opened its first brick-and-mortar store on London Road on August 1.

Stoked boasts a belly-busting menu full of dishes you’d expect to find at a typical BBQ restaurant, but all are completely free from animal ingredients.

The mouth-watering menu features the likes of the Chick’n Slider burger with smoked BBQ soya chicken chunks, southwest slaw, herbed garlic mayo, pickled red onion and candied jalapeños.

They even offer their take on a classic Reuben sandwich with house-cured ‘pastrami’, slaw, sauerkraut, vegan cheese, caramelised onions, Russian sriracha dressing on german rye sourdough.

Save room for dessert because they have teamed up with local vegan doughnut company Doughyos, to offer some delicious sweet treats such as their Oreo and Biscoff doughnuts.

‘Vegan food has come a long way’

The owner of the new vegan eatery, Billy Reeve, was inspired to create the meat-free menu following his travels in Austin, Texas in the US in 2018.

Speaking to local news outlet Echo News, Reeve said: “I was blown away by the style of the food, and came back and started cooking, and cooking, and cooking.

“I don’t have a chef’s background, I learned on the job, I wanted to recreate the dishes I had there by myself. I spent days cooking getting it wrong and getting it right eventually.

“Vegan food has come a long way in the last three or four years. Previously you’d find a few places in London to go some but the stuff you can get now is incredible.”

Stoked Vegan BBQ is open Thursday 3-9pm, Friday 3-10.30pm, Saturday 12-10.30pm and Sunday 12-9pm for takeaway at 787 London Road
