McDonald's is trialling its McPlant burger in Victoria, Australia across 270 stores but hasn't committed to making it 100% plant-based.

McDonald’s vegan burger is being trialled at 270 stores across Victoria, Australia.

However, unlike the UK’s McPlant burger, Australia’s version is not suitable for vegans. The burger will still include the Beyond Meat patty, however, it will be cooked on the same grill as its meat counterparts.

Additionally, the product will include egg-based mayonnaise and dairy cheese.

Furthermore, the McPlant trial will assess the consumer demand for vegan burgers at McDonald’s.

In a statement, McDonald’s Australia shared: “Through this trial, McDonald’s Australia will learn more about customer demand for the McPlant and how this new menu item impacts restaurant kitchen operations, which will inform future menu decisions locally.”

It seems that the UK McPlant is the only edition to be 100%. Similar to Australia, countries such as Denmark, Sweden, and the US have added the meat-free burger to their menus with the addition of animal products.

Furthermore, there is hope that with an increase in demand that McDonald’s will roll out the 100% vegan Mcplant around the world.

McDonald’s move to plant-based

As one of the biggest fast-food giants in the world, McDonald’s has faced criticism for not doing enough to introduce sustainable meat alternatives to its consumers.

Additionally, the global chain has been condemned for its animal welfare responsibilities. In 2019, Humane League launched a video campaign titled #McGhoster drawing public attention to the restaurant brand’s failure to improve the conditions for its chickens.

Since then, McDonald’s announced its 3-year global partnership with Beyond Meat to introduce more meat-free options on its menu.

Moreover, the chain announced further commitments to sustainable production in 2021, promising McDonald’s UK will be “a market leader” in plant-based food by 2025.

Although it only has 2 plant-based meals on its menu to date, we hope to see these plans in action in the near future.
