TGI Fridays has announced the addition of a brand new innovative vegan dish joining its menu nationwide this Veganuary.
Giving vegans a cruelty-free alternative to steak and chips, the restaurant chain has created a plant-based version from an unlikely ingredient – watermelon!
Launching in all TGI Fridays restaurants in the UK priced at £12.99, the meat-free steak is made from fresh watermelon carefully cut into steak slices then chargrilled to create its unique steak-like texture. The slices are then marinated in garlic and seasoned with spicy sriracha to give the dish a fiery kick with a distinctive taste and served with a creamy avocado sauce and Fridays® Legendary Glaze to give the dish a hint of sweetness.
In a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, TGI Fridays Head Development Chef, Terry McDowell, said: “We came up with the vegan steak to give our guests the same great taste from our grills but in a different way. Seasoning with Siracha and garlic gives the dish savoury, sweet and spicy notes with a juicy centre that cuts and eats like a juicy sirloin steak.
“We’re really excited about the new vegan steak because it’s unique to us here at TGI Fridays. We have taken a watermelon and made it into a main course. Most people think of watermelon as a sweet dish, but we have flipped that on its head. It is full of flavour and perfect for Veganuary and those who want to try something different.”
The restaurant chain will also be welcoming new vegan options to the menu on January 6th such as the Vegan Stack Burger.
