The UK’s largest supermarket chain Tesco is expanding its range of wines with the addition of four vegan-friendly wines to its Finest range.
With summer on the way the wines are perfect for enjoying on a warm evening and customers can choose from an 11.5% abv English White from Hush Heath Winery; a 2018 Chilean Aromatico (12.5%); a 2018 Mosel Riesling (12% – £7); a 2017 Chablis (12% – £15) and a 2018 South African Cinsault (13.5% – £7.50). The wines are vegan-friendly with the exception of the Aromatico.
In a statement, a spokesperson for Tesco said the wines: “Share a vibrancy and freshness that makes them well-suited to seasonal drinking, while also giving wine lovers the opportunity to explore some lesser-known regions, grapes and styles.”
Many people are often surprised to learn that not all wine is vegan, thanks to the fining and filtration process that wines and beers go through to make them crystal clear. Historically fining agents would range from animal blood to isinglass (a substance obtained from the dried swim bladders of fish, who on earth discovered that?), but now egg whites are the most commonly used.
