Stella McCartney has unveiled a ‘revolutionary’ garment made from plant-based sequins.
The fashion designer partnered with eco start-up Radiant Matter to create a sleeveless jumpsuit using Biosequin.
The biodegradable and non-toxic material is innovated from plant-based cellulose. It uses no metals, minerals, synthetic pigments or colorants.
Donned by model and actor Cara Delevingne, the outfit was featured in this month’s American Vogue.

‘A more conscious future of fashion’
“Who says sustainability can’t be sexy?” said McCartney.
“Cara is breathtaking in this rare, precious garment; I’m so grateful that Vogue has given us the platform to share it and inspire others to see the potential of a more conscious future of fashion.”
Plant-based sequins
McCartney’s parent company LVHM has slammed the fashion industry for its ‘massive’ contribution to the world’s plastic problem.
It cites statistics on how British women purchase 33 million sequinned garments each festive season. However, a staggering 1.7 million of these end up in landfill after only being worn a hand full of times.
Moreover, around 35 per cent of microplastics released into the world’s oceans come from synthetic clothing.
Radiant Matter shares this concern, saying sequins and glitter ‘leak into our environment, causing problems to human and planetary health’.
“We have loved Stella McCartney’s uncompromising approach to sustainability and aesthetics, which are reflected in any decision, down to the fabric and thread choice, resulting in a stunning yet fully plant-derived garment,” added founder Elissa Brunato.
