Sainsbury’s is the first supermarket in the UK to sell a vegan milk alternative made from peas.
In a first for UK supermarkets, Sainsbury’s is launching a range of innovative vegan milk alternatives made from yellow split peas that boast a number of health and environmental benefits.
Available exclusively to Sainsbury’s supermarkets and home delivery service as part of Sainsbury’s Future Brands programme, the pea-based dairy-free milks from The Mighty Society come in both sweetened and unsweetened varieties and contain an impressive 8g of plant protein per 250ml serving – that’s 8x more than almond milk!
Not only that, they also contain 50% more calcium than cows milk and 40% less sugar as well as being a rich source of Vitamin D and B12.
The milk are also more sustainable and planet-friendly than other plant-based alternatives such as almond milk as it takes 100x the amount of water to grow almonds compared to yellow split peas.
In a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, co-founder of The Mighty Society, Nick Watkins, commented: “We’re delighted to now see our product live on supermarket shelves, providing consumers with a delicious alternative to milk products.
“We’ve worked extremely hard to develop a product that is beneficial for the consumer, but also for the planet. Just as importantly, it also tastes great!”
Head of Future Brands at Sainsbury’s, Rachel Eyre, commented: “At Sainsbury’s we’re always looking for exciting new brands and products that appeal to our growing customer needs and lifestyle choices. We’re really excited about launching The Mighty Society and it joining the Future Brands programme. We believe our customers will really enjoy this great-tasting, plant-based milk alternative.”
The Mighty Society Pea Mylk drinks (RRP £2.50) are available in Sainsbury’s now for £2 for a limited time.
