One of the UK’s leading alternative meat brands, Quorn, has joined forces with fast-food giant KFC to create a new meat-free range.
Quorn will supply its mycoprotein based chicken to KFC across European venues, following the successful trial of some tasty new veggie products in the Netherlands and Germany.
But what can we expect to see on the menu?
Quorn told vegconomist that a whole meat-free menu is being developed including vegan veggie wraps and big buckets.
German restaurants will be the first to welcome the new meat-free menu before the rollout continues to thousands more restaurants across the rest of Europe.
Chief Commercial Officer at Quorn, Peter Harrison, told vegconomist: “To cater to the growing demand for meat-free food around the world, we’re delighted to be working with KFC in more markets following the success of the KFC Vegan Chicken Burger in UK and Ireland.
“Ensuring there are delicious meat-free food choices for consumers, wherever and whenever they make food decisions, is key to our mission of providing healthy food for people and planet.”
KFC and its vegan ventures
Due to the ever-expanding vegan market, KFC has trialled and launched several vegan-friendly products over the years.
When KFC first trialled the vegan burger in the UK, it proved so popular that it sold out in just 4 days!
Named the Original Recipe Vegan Burger, the company reported that sales were an impressive 500% higher than that of a standard meat-based burger launch.
With the demand so high, it was only a matter of time before it became a permanent item on the menu.
Vegan burgers haven’t been the only vegan food item tested.
In the US, KFC worked with Beyond Meat to test vegan chicken nuggets and a vegan wings bucket.
Strategy and Innovation Director at KFC, Kate Wall, told vegconomist: “Our fans were thrilled to see the launch of our Vegan Burger in 2020.
“The Original Recipe Vegan Burger proved to be such a success in the UK and Ireland that we have already tested Quorn-based products in several other countries, and plan to extend into multiple European markets in the coming months.
“We are excited to continue working with Quorn to deliver great tasting meat-free options to more KFC fans across Europe.”
Whether you choose to support fast-food chains or not, it’s exciting to see the vegan influence continue to grow.
