Primark is the first fashion company to get a vegan certification from TÜV Rheinland group.

The high street is becoming more vegan-friendly as clothing giant Primark becomes the first company in the world to receive vegan certification for their clothing, shoes and carrier bags by independent inspection firm TÜV Rheinland.

TÜV Rheinland Vegan Certification is the first mark that not only declares a product as vegan, but that it has been tested and inspected by an independent third party. The certified product is declared free of animal-derived materials such as silk, wool, leather, pearl, feather, down, bone, exotic skins or fur. Chemicals used in the production process have also been declared by the producer to be free of substances of animal origin and verified.

With growing concern about the global climate crisis and the role played by fast fashion, consumers are beginning to pursue sustainable lifestyles, especially with regards to consumerism, sustainability, environmental protection and animal welfare. Consequently, shoppers are changing their expectations for manufacturers and brands.

A study conducted by Mintel, an international market intelligence agency, found that more than a third of fashion shoppers would like to spend their money in stores that do not use animal products.

Last summer, Primark launched its first range of vegan and cruelty-free skincare certified by The Vegan Society.

The range, ‘PS… Naturals’, was the company’s first range to be registered with The Vegan Society’s prestigious trademark and consists of five skincare products made up of ingredients that are of at least 90% natural origin.
