Over 16,000 Brits have signed a PETA petition calling for the government to end the sale and importation of foie gras in the UK.

Foie gras, translated to ‘fatty liver’, is the process of force-feeding ducks and geese until their livers swell to around 10 times its natural size. This brutal industry is illegal in the UK and several other countries, however, around 200 tonnes of the food is imported from abroad per year and sold in the UK.

Therefore, PETA has written to George Eustice, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs in addition to launching the petition, hoping to end the practice.

If foie gras is too cruel to produce in the UK, why are we still importing it?

‘Close our borders to this cruel trade’

PETA’s letter to George Eustice reads:

“Foie gras is a notoriously vile food for which birds are condemned to such intense suffering that its production is illegal in the UK and more than a dozen other countries.

“We should close our borders to this cruel trade. A ban would reflect the view of the overwhelming majority of Brits. 79% want to see an end to imports of foie gras.

“By making the decision to stop importing and selling this vile product, the UK would close the loophole that currently allows a food whose production is so cruel that it cannot take place here to remain on our shelves. And, become a world leader in animal protection.”

We sincerely hope the government pays attention to this petition and ends the cruel foie gras trade in the UK once and for all.
