PETA has launched a petition for fashion giant Levi's to switch to vegan leather which has received over 125,000 signatures in support

Animal rights organisation PETA has called into question fashion giant Levi’s commitment to sustainability and progressive practices. The charity is urging the brand to switch to vegan leather for their jean patches and has gathered over 125,000 signatures on its petition.

PETA has said this switch would be the most effective way for Levi’s to reduce its environmental impact.

Levi’s and sustainability

Levi’s claim to be committed to creating a better planet and using sustainable materials.

“For us at Levi’s, it’s about making better choices like sourcing more sustainable materials and finding ways to use less water. And it’s about bettering the planet and the communities that share it at every step along the way.

“We’ve always stood up for what’s right — and creating sustainable clothing is no different.”

However, PETA’s campaign has questioned this as leather production is a significant contributor to climate change. Moreover, the process of raising cattle for their skin is not a sustainable practice by any means.

Vegan leather

Vegan leather is no longer a niche product. Last year Doc Martens boasted than their vegan range now accounts for almost half its sales. Other brands who have made the switch include Tesla and von Holzhausen.

Innovative brands have recently emerged around the globe with leather made from everything from banana skins to leaves. Celebrities Natalie Portman and John Legend have just invested in mushroom leather. Who would have thought it?

The move to vegan leather would be a ‘business-savvy’ switch for Levi’s according to PETA. With a growing population of vegans, vegetarians and flexitarians, how could it not be?
