Takeaway pizza chain Papa John’s has added a new vegan pizza to its menu – a cheesy pizza topped with vegan hot dogs.
Takeaway pizza chain Papa John’s has added a new limited edition pizza to its UK menu topped with a Heinz tomato ketchup sauce loaded with vegan hot dog sausages made from soya, dairy-free cheese from Sheese, freshly sliced onions and Heinz American style mustard sauce.
The pizza can be customised with a variety of extra toppings such as peppers, tomatoes, chilli peppers, sweet corn and red onion, with prices starting at £14.99 for a small pizza.
The company recently launched its first vegan menu earlier this year featuring three brand new cheesy vegan pizzas and marmite and cheese scrolls.
Controversy
The takeaway came under fire shortly after it announced it would be launching a vegan menu complete with vegan cheese after customers complained that their pizzas were topped with non-vegan cheese.
According to multiple customers on social media, they were given dairy cheese with their pizzas – with branch staff saying they had made the substitution after running out.
The company took to Twitter to say: “Please rest assured that this is being looked into as a matter of urgency and being taken extremely seriously – we are looking to put things right asap.”
High-street restaurants
Major takeaway pizza companies have been slow to offer vegan options to customers compared to high-street restaurant chains like Pizza Express and Zizzi’s, although Pizza Hut recently introduced a vegan pizza to its menu in 253 Pizza Hut Restaurants across the UK.
