Oatly is planning to open a brand new factory here in the UK which will be one of the largest plant-based dairy factories in the world.

Swedish oat milk brand Oatly will open its first UK factory in Peterborough during Q1 of 2023.

The factory will be one of the biggest plant-based dairy factories in the world and will have the capacity to produce up to 450 million litres of oat milk per year.

This will mean that plant-based dairy will be even more accessible across the UK, and easier for people to make the switch from cows milk.

It will also supply the local area with at least 200 new jobs, which will be rooted in sustainability for a greener future.

Oatly’s new UK factory is part of a wider initiative to build factories fit for the future, with efficient use of resources and minimal negative impact on the planet. Moreover, Oatly aims to use 100% renewable energy and reduce water consumption and waste by 75% at the factory by the year 2029.

In fact, all the oats used will be sourced locally across the UK, and the factory will supply the UK market alone, making the process encouragingly sustainable.

This news comes shortly after Oatly announced it would open for Initial Public Offering (IPO) in May this year, seeking a valuation of a whopping $10 billion.

It seems that Oatly is just going from strength to strength, and we can’t wait for the oat milk revolution!

‘Sustainability is core to our factory planning’

Speaking in a statement sent to Vegan Food and Living, General Manager at Oatly UK Ishen Paran said: “Questions about a potential UK factory have been circulating for a while, and we’re really excited to finally announce the news of its arrival in 2023.

“The UK is a really important driver of the global plant-based movement, with a growing demand for Oatly across the country, and we’re excited to supply this increased demand.”

Johan Rabe, Chief Supply Chain Officer added: “We look forward to supplying the UK with more oat drink – we’re even more excited to do it in a sustainable way.

“Like everything we do at Oatly, we’ve ensured that sustainability is core to our factory planning. Everything, from the sourcing of our oats, to the production of our product range specifically designed for humans, has sustainability at the heart of it.

“Even as we strive to grow one of the biggest plant-based dairy factories to its full capacity, this will still be our top priority”.

We can’t wait to see Oatly open their new UK factory and become even more accessible in the UK, viva la oat milk revolution!
