McDonald's UK has launched its Plan For Change sustainability campaign, promising to be the "market leader" in vegan food

McDonald’s UK has announced its Plan for Change sustainability campaign.

The plan outlines the ways in which the fast-food chain is working towards making a difference to its communities and the environment.

Interestingly, McDonald’s has pledged to become a “market leader in vegan plant-based food” by 2025.

Moreover, the announcement comes just weeks after the chain launched its first vegan burger.

McDonald’s UK Plan for Change

In a statement made to Vegan Food & Living, McDonald’s UK has created a road map for its sustainability campaign.

The plan targets four factors; the restaurant; the menu; the packaging; and the community.

In addition to launching its “first restaurant built to a UK net-zero emissions standard”, the chain is making its packaging renewable and recyclable, as well as claiming to help one million people gain new skills to further their careers.

McDonald’s has also promised to become a leader in the vegan plant-based fast-food market by 2025.

The food company said: “You will have seen we launched McPlant recently, and that’s just the start!”

Although these words are encouraging, McDonald’s has only recently trailed its first vegan burger and has been under the spotlight for its lack of vegan options.

People’s reactions to the McPlant burger were varied. Some saw the launch as a step in the right direction, others saw it as “too little too late”.

The chain had recently been targeted by animal welfare activists, demanding McDonald’s goes completely plant-based by 2025.

Furthermore, could this be the positive response we’ve been waiting for?

McDonald’s fight against climate change

McDonald’s Plan for Change campaign is set to combat the climate crisis.

In the statement, Paul Pomroy, Chief Executive, McDonald’s UK & Ireland said: “McDonald’s has a long history of taking action where it really matters to the communities we serve.

“But we are at a moment now where we need to accelerate our ambition and work even harder to look after each other and the planet.”

Pomroy explained that the Plan For Change campaign isn’t just a sustainability plan, but also it is a business priority.

We hope that the ambitious plan for McDonald’s inspires other businesses to get ambitious with their initiatives to help climate change and reduce meat consumption.
