McDonald’s UK has just introduced the first ever vegan-friendly Happy Meal, along with a new Spicy Veggie Wrap on the main menu thanks to growing demand from customers for meat-free options.
McDonald’s has never held veggies in terribly high regard. It literally serves no sandwich that’s vegan-friendly for any meal of the day, and you get the feeling it’d still be frying potatoes in beef fat if not for a class-action lawsuit. Also, there was that time it made a “kale is dumb” joke (which has since backfired).
However, in 2017 the company introduced its first ever vegan burger to the menu in restaurants in Finland, but said there were no plans to roll out the new option globally.
Today the company is introducing the first ever Veggie Happy Meal and the new Spicy Veggie Wrap, which has been accredited by the Vegetarian Society, to provide a greater choice for its customers.
Lynne Elliot, Chief Executive the Vegetarian Society said: “We’re really proud to have worked closely with McDonald’s for over 10 years and it’s great to see their veggie menu developing, especially as McDonalds tell us a third of their customers think it’s important to eat more veggie meals.
“There’s a growing demand for veggie food everywhere and it’s fantastic to see McDonald’s meeting the needs of their customers. It is especially important for young veggies to be able to choose something to eat when they are out with their friends. With the new Spicy Veggie Wrap and Veggie Happy Meal carrying our trademark diners can trust their meal is one hundred percent vegetarian.”
Duncan Cruttenden, Menu Director at McDonald’s UK&I explained the decision to offer more veggie options, stating: “Our commitment is to offer great food, great choice and a great experience to our customers and we are constantly asking them how we can evolve and improve. We are really thrilled to be able to give our customers this new choice with the addition of the Spicy Vegetarian Wrap and our first Vegetarian Happy Meal.”
The two tasty new vegetarian wraps catering to adults and children include:
- NEW Happy Meal® Veggie Wrap – 209kcal: made with a Red Pesto Goujon with Tomato Ketchup and Shredded Lettuce wrapped in a soft, toasted tortilla (RRP: £2.49)
- NEW Spicy Veggie Wrap – 364kcal: made with two Red Pesto Goujons, a generous dressing of Spicy Relish with Tomato, Lettuce and Red Onion all wrapped in a soft, toasted tortilla (RRP: £2.99)
According to a spokesperson for the company, all the ingredients in the new Veggie Happy Meal Wrap and the Spicy Veggie Wrap are dairy-free and vegan. However, the tortilla wraps pass through the same toaster as the buns, which do contain milk.
