Actor and environmentalist Maisie Williams has collaborated with French brand Coperni on a range of designer apple leather handbags.
The Game of Thrones star has designed two handbags – the Crossbody Swipe and Crossbody Swipe Mini – after developing an interest in fashion over the last two years.
The bags are made from perforated vegan apple leather, which is made using the fibres from apple waste that’s naturally dried without chemicals.
Following the apple theme, the bags come with detachable pins inspired by fruit label stickers.
Announcing the collaboration last month, Williams said on Instagram: “I have loved making this collaboration with Coperni.
“I hope you love the bags and I hope this pushes more people to both shop and produce with materials that contribute towards a more sustainable future.”
The actor is passionate about environmental issues, and frequently uses her social media to talk about the climate crisis.
Earlier this year, she praised Sir David Attenborough while at COP26 and spoke with Indigenous activists.
In April, she announced her role as H&M’s Global Sustainability Ambassador on Instagram, stating, “I will be working closely with experts within H&M to drive their sustainability initiatives and shape the path towards an accessible and circular fashion future.”
Sustainable fashion
Maisie Williams isn’t the first environmentally-minded celebrity to work on vegan fashion items.
This year, we’ve seen a trend for celebrity collaborations, including vegan Air Jordans by Billie Eilish, Algae-based vegan sneakers by Jason Momoa, and Adidas’ first vegan football boots, in collaboration with Stella McCartney and Paul Pogba.
This year has also seen a boom in animal-free leather alternatives, with H&M debuting its vegan Co-Exist collection, featuring cactus leather.
Mushroom leather has been particularly popular, featuring in a Stella McCartney collection and in some vegan-friendly cars.
