Athletes are increasingly opting to follow a plant-based diet in a bid to improve performance and increase recovery time with even the likes of elite athletes Lewis Hamilton and Novak Djokovic adopting a plant-based diet in order to power themselves through their tough training and competitions

Even footballers are getting in on the action with Jermaine Defoe, Héctor Bellerín and Sebastián Pérez singing the praises of a plant-based diet for athletes.

Keen to explore the ‘rise of veganism in football’, former England International player Jermaine Jenas, who also works as a columnist for British GQ, is investigating the growing trend in a new BBC documentary entitled Football Going Vegan.

According to the BBC: “With so many sportsmen and women adopting a plant-based diet, we go on a journey with former England footballer Jermaine Jenas as he delves deeper into the somewhat controversial subject.

“He speaks to celebrity nutritionist Rhiannon Lambert, cooks a couple of dishes with Instagram chef Miguel Barclay, whilst also spending the day at the first ever vegan football club, Forest Green Rovers.

“Along his journey, Jermaine sees if he can incorporate a vegan lifestyle into his family life and goes head to head with vegan activist Ed Winters (Earthling Ed), as well as catching up with vegan footballer Chris Smalling.”

Football Going Vegan airs on BBC One on October 20 at 23.15 but if you can’t wait until then you can find it on iPlayer now.
