Furniture giant IKEA has developed its vegan hot dog recipe to taste even meatier.
The reformulated sausages, made from rice protein, will now feature a plant-based ‘casing’ to replicate the ‘sensory experience of biting into an animal-based hot dog’.
IKEA says the plant-based hot dogs will debut locally across Europe this summer. However, it is yet to announce specific launch dates.
The announcement comes after the brand’s announcement to be 50 percent vegan by 2025 to reach its sustainability goals.
‘Lower climate impact’
“IKEA is driven by a vision to create a better everyday life for the many people,” said Helene Von Reis of IKEA Sweden.
“Through the food business, we can contribute to this by offering a tasty, healthier, and more sustainable food option.
“We want to offer more plant-based alternatives with a lower climate impact. Choosing plant-based food often impacts climate footprint less than animal-based options.”

IKEA’s vegan hot dog
Featuring onion, apple, salt, pepper, and smokiness, IKEA says its plant-based dog has a more realistic sausage flavour than before.
“We’ve spent much time in the development process to give the best experience for our customers,” added Von Reis.
“With a great taste, texture, and a snap when you bite it, the plant-based hot dog is a perfect alternative to a traditional iconic hot dog.”
