Fashion house Hugo Boss has released a limited-edition collection of men’s shoes made from vegan pineapple leather as part of the brand’s commitment to using more sustainable materials.

The range, which is available in four colours, is described by the company as “innovation meets responsible design” and consists of sneakers in four naturally-dyed colours.

Each shoe is primarily made from Piñatex, lightweight recycled TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) soles, a cotton-linen lining, as well as organic cotton laces. The company describes the new collection as “footwear that makes a minimal imprint on the planet and offers a sleek BOSS look.”

The material, known as Piñatex, is “an innovative leather-alternative created from pineapple leaf fibres”. The leaves are a by-product of the pineapple harvest, and no other resources are needed to produce the material, which means that farmers receive an additional source of income. Unlike animal leather, Piñatex is also cruelty-free and environmentally friendly.
