Fashion brand H&M has announced its first PETA-approved vegan fashion range.

The collection titled ‘Co-Exist Story’ features a range of alternative sustainable materials to wool, fur, and down.

Co-Exist Story spans across womenswear, menswear, and kidswear and is the third instalment to the brand’s Innovation Stories, which showcases sustainable and innovative materials.

Moreover, the Co-Exist Story Collection will launch worldwide from November 4th.

H&M’s vegan collection combines innovative animal substitute fabrics with a fashion-forward mentality.

The garments were inspired by 90s partywear and functional outwear.

In addition, the vegan fashion range features fabrics such FLWRDWN, an alternative to animal down using wildflowers, and VEGEA, a plant-based substitute for animal-derived leathers.

Co-Exist Story also includes pieces made from recycled nylon and polyester materials.

The fast fashion industry is one of the highest polluters of greenhouse gas emissions, as well as contributing to excessive landfill waste, disproportionate water usage and microplastics entering our oceans.

Furthermore, it is imperative that fast fashion brands follow H&M’s efforts to find alternative materials and spread the word about the effects of fast fashion.

“Fabulous vegan designs that are kinder to the planet and to the animals”

In a statement, Creative Advisor at H&M, Ann-Sofie Johansson, said: “The ‘Co-Exist Story’ collection epitomises our ongoing commitment at H&M to exploring innovative alternatives to animal-derived fabrics.”

“H&M and PETA have enjoyed a positive dialogue throughout the project, and we are proud to support the valuable work that PETA is doing every day.”

Additionally, PETA Corporate Responsibility Manager, Laura Shields, added: “Much of our work at PETA is accomplished by forming positive relationships with companies such as H&M as we strive to end the use of animal-derived materials.”

“We’re thrilled to partner with H&M on a collection that features fabulous vegan designs that are kinder to the planet and to the animals who live on it.”

Vegan fashion collections such as H&M’s will continue to inspire the global conversation surrounding sustainable materials in the fashion industry.
