It’s official, cactus leather is in.

Fashion giant H&M is launching a new debut collection using vegan cactus leather and other eco-friendly materials.

This new collection will be part of the brand’s Innovation Stories concept which showcases sustainable processes and will feature DESSERTO’s cactus leather.

Created in Mexico, DESSERTO is a sustainable and cruelty-free alternative to traditional cowhide, made by drying mature leaves from the plant and converting them into pliable leather.

This is not DESSERTO’s first venture into fashion, as back in December sustainable shoemakers Clae created a collection of cactus leather sneakers entitled Bradley Cactus.

However, H&M’s Science Story collection will see DESSERTO in new territory as its material will be using in clothing with key pieces including bright white wide-leg jeans with a removable double waistband, a cropped collared shirt with an oversized breast pocket and a cuffed tracksuit.

These will be partnered with bold, dynamic accessories such as acid yellow block heels, chunky necklaces and animal-free handbags.

‘A sustainable and circular fashion system’

Speaking in a statement on H&M’s website, creative advisor Ann-Sofie Johansson explained, “Our new concept continues H&M’s journey towards a sustainable and circular fashion system.

“Innovation Stories allows us to develop and grow, all while creating desirable and long-lasting pieces that we hope our customers will love and be proud of.”

Concept designer Ella Soccorsi added, “Innovation Stories is a platform that pushes our experimentation to the next level. The initiative encourages our work with scientists and developers and puts a spotlight on our progressive ideas.

“Science Story is a homage to the years of research and experiments behind these incredible materials.”

While arguably the most sustainable fashion practice is buying second-hand, every innovation is a step forward. And with animal-free alternatives leading the way, we are feeling ambitiously positive about the future of the fashion industry.

The Science Story collection will be available at hm.com from 18 March in the US and Canada.
