In a statement, a spokesperson confirmed the launch stating that the new product is “designed to mirror some of the sausage roll’s classic features, including 96 layers of light and crisp puff pastry, but instead is made with a bespoke Quorn filling”.
News of the launch follows a successful petition, which received over 20,000 signatures, from vegan charity PETA who urged the company to offer customers the choice of a vegan version of the popular product last January.
Speaking at the time, PETA Director of Vegan Corporate Projects, Dawn Carr, said: “More people than ever are clamoring for healthy vegan options from their favorite on-the-go eateries. PETA is calling on Greggs to heed this growing demand, add a vegan sausage roll to the menu, and watch the cruelty-free treats fly off the shelves.”
Seeing the huge demand from consumers for a vegan sausage roll, the company set to work to create a vegan-friendly product that rivalled it’s meaty counterpart in both taste and texture.
Discussing the new product launch, Roger Whiteside, chief executive at Greggs said: “Like many food retailers we have seen increasing demand for vegetarian and vegan products.”
“We have been trying to develop a vegan version of our famous sausage roll for some time now. It has not been easy but our taste panel customers all love this one, so we have decided to launch it as our contribution to Veganuary.”
The Vegan Sausage Roll will be on sale in 950 Greggs shops across the country from January 3rd, and will be priced at £1. Click here to find your nearest location selling the vegan sausage roll: https://bit.ly/2TqbSLY
