A mother and daughter have transformed their family-owned dairy farm into a vegan retreat.

Located in Bengaluru, India, the Lilac Farm is run by Anitha (56) and Christina Ajith (23).

The pair grow plant-based produce such as tomatoes, chillies, bananas, gooseberries and mangoes.

Their 13-acre site is also home to more than 50 rescue animals, and offers a slew of services for guests, ranging from yoga experiences to farm tours.

On AirBnb, the Lilac Farm says it can hold up to 16 guests, boasting eight bedrooms and eight bathrooms. The accommodation also features a pool, outdoor shower, dedicated workspace and a BBQ.

From dairy farm to vegan retreat

However, for more than a decade, the sanctuary used to operate as a standard dairy farm.

Christina says her Lupus diagnosis (an autoimmune disease) led her to reassess her relationship with animal products and their effect on the body. Within just two months, her entire family went vegan.

When Covid hit the country, Christina and her family decided to move to the farm to lessen her chances of contracting the virus.

‘A passion for farming’

Speaking to The Better India, she said: “When we moved there, it was still a functioning dairy farm, and we were set on converting it into a vegan farm.

“We kept weaker and older cows who needed to be taken care of at the farm. The rest were sold to other dairy farm owners.

“The idea of the farm stay came to us when we started living on the farm. I loved cooking and my mother always had a passion for farming. So, we decided to combine our skills and that is how The Lilac Farm started.”
