Interest in vegan Christmas supermarket products has surged, according to new data released by Ocado.
The online retailer says that 29 per cent more shoppers are planning to enjoy a plant-based centrepiece for their festive meal than last year.
In addition, it says that just in the last week, searches on Ocado for ‘Christmas vegan’ have more than tripled, rising by 389 per cent.
Interestingly, the number of searches for plant-based options are outweighing their vegetarian counterpart, with 84 per cent week-on-week growth.
Meanwhile, the percentage of Ocado customers who say they’re planning to enjoy a vegetarian centrepiece this year has increased by 15 per cent.
Christmas vegan food
In a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, Beth Vickerman, Vegan and Continental Deli Buyer at Ocado Retail, said: “Gone are the days of nut roast and veg being the only solution, as the options now available on Ocado are at an all-time high.
“We’re also seeing the serving size of vegan festive centrepieces increase, with more options that feed three to four people as opposed to single servings, as families and friends try plant-based together.”
The outlet adds that in a bid to cater to growing demand for meat-free options, it now offers more than 133 vegan- and vegetarian-friendly products its Christmas dinner aisle.

Festive vegan supermarket options
Ocado has joined other major UK retailers in releasing extensive vegan festive ranges this year.
Sainsbury’s vegan Christmas options have been upgraded this year as the supermarket added some plant-based dishes to its Taste The Difference range. Sainsbury’s said that it was so proud of the quality it had achieved with its vegan products, they deserved to be in the premium range.
The M&S vegan Christmas range includes reindeer bao buns, mushroom parfait with a port glaze, and Santa’s cookie pot.
Meanwhile, the Morrisons vegan Christmas range features 10 vegan products, eight of which have never been seen before. Here you’ll find a maple and orange ‘gammon’ joint and a no-prawn toast baguette.
