After producing dairy milk for 90 years, Elmhurst Dairy dropped the dairy and started to produce their own range of healthy plant-based milks, and they’ve just added vegan peanut milk to their range.

Speaking about their decision to cease the production of dairy products, Elmhurts’ CEO Henry Schwartz said: “Pasteurized fluid milk has sort of gone out of style. We are unable to continue to go on without ongoing losses.”
“There isn’t much room for our kind of business. I tried to keep this open because it was my father’s plant and he asked me to do so.”
In March 2017 they released their first dairy-free range which included walnut, almond and cashew milks. Now the company is expanding its range and have added two refreshing new flavours: peanut milk and chocolate peanut milk.
In order to create a vegan milk with a similar consistency to dairy milk the company uses a process called cold milling. This process means the drink contains less ingredients, and does not use the emulsifiers, gums and stabilizers that are often used to give dairy-free milks a creamier texture.
Spekaing about the nutritional values of the peanut milk, CEO Bob Parker: “The peanut milk concept delivers eight grams of plant-based protein per serving, which is comparable to dairy milk.”
The dairy industry has been close to reaching crisis point in recent years as more and more people are opting to ditch the dairy instead of plant-based milk alternatives. It’s no surprise that those who previously produced dairy products are keen to cash in on the trend as the dairy-free alternative market is set to reach a staggering $21.7billion within the next six years.
