Cathay Pacific airline is offering passengers a plant-based pork alternative as part of its in-flight menu, making it the world’s first airline to do so.
Cathay Pacific has added a new vegan option to its in-flight menu, OmniPork, a plant-based pork alternative that it claims is “delicious in any recipe that traditionally uses real pork.”
OmniPork is made from a blend of pea protein, non-GMO soy, shiitake mushrooms and rice to create a vegan meat alternative that mimics the taste and texture of pork.
Unlike pork, however, OmniPork has 0mg cholesterol, is cruelty-free and is 86% lower in saturated fat and 66% lower in calories* than pork.
According to the company: “Pork is the most consumed meat in the world, accounting for nearly 40% of global meat production. OmniPork is a climate-friendly alternative that reduces greenhouse gases, saves our seas from waste run-off, feeds many more people per hectare of land, and is better for our health.”
For the entire month of October 2019, Business Class passengers can enjoy OmniPork Bolognaise with Garganelli pasta on all long-haul flights departing from Hong Kong so the airline reviews passenger satisfaction and gauge demand.
Cathay Pacific will also be collaborating with a Hong Kong social venture Green Monday to develop new plant-based dining options to give passengers looking for meat-free options more choice when dining on board.
Since October 2018, Cathay Pacific has also been serving Beyond Meat as well as a beef alternative marketed by Green Monday in The Pier First Class Lounge at Hong Kong International Airport.
