The fast food giant is giving away the plant-based Whopper on what it says is traditionally the 'meatiest' day of the year - National Burger Day

Burger King will give away 10,000 free plant-based Whoppers across the UK tomorrow (Thursday, August 25).

Hungry diners can get their hands on one of the burgers, which are available on a first come, first served basis, via click and collect using the Burger King app.

The fast food giant has pledged to become 50 per cent meat-free by 2030, and its giveaway is part of a slew of initiatives it has put in place in an effort to reach this goal.

It revealed that its offer follows research showing that 91 per cent of Brits are meat-eaters, and 66 per cent are reluctant to try Burger King’s vegan menu.

In fact, 51 per cent of Brits said in the study that they would not try a plant-based burger even if it was free.

Now the chain is putting its money where its mouth is, and trying to tempt these reluctant diners with its plant-based Whopper giveaway.

Burger King’s plant-based Whopper

The chain’s animal-free alternative to its flagship burger features ‘a flame-grilled, soy-based patty, topped with tomatoes, fresh cut lettuce, vegan mayo, pickles, a swirl of ketchup, and sliced onions on a soft sesame seed bun’.

It isn’t certified vegan by The Vegan Society as it is cooked on the same broiler as the meat-based Whopper to guarantee the flame-grilled taste.

This means that while the sandwich contains no animal ingredients, there is a risk of cross-contamination, and so some vegans choose not to eat it.

Free plant-based Whoppers

In a statement sent to Vegan Food & Living, a spokesperson for Burger King said: “Burger King’s meat-free items cost the same as the iconic meat counterparts, but to prove they also taste just as good, fans can tuck into the flame-grilled Plant-Based Whopper, or the mouth-wateringly Vegan Royale totally free.

“As part of Burger King’s plans to go 50% meat-free by 2030, it launched its first-ever completely meat-free restaurant, with a pilot takeover at the Leicester Square flagship earlier this year.

“Whopper Swapper is the next step in encouraging Brits to give its plant-based and vegan menu items a go with some of the signature burgers up for grabs for free.”
