Dairy giant Ben & Jerry's has launched a brand new non-dairy flavour in honour of Colin Kaepernick in the struggle for racial justice.

Ben & Jerry’s has launched another non-dairy flavour in aid of an important social issue. After releasing their ‘Save our Swirled’ flavour as part of the fight for climate justice earlier this year, the dairy giant has now partnered with the Black Lives Matter movement.

The new flavour features a caramel non-dairy sunflower butter base with fudge chips, graham cracker swirls and chocolate cookie swirls.

In addition to tasting good, it celebrates the courageous work by Colin Kaepernick in confronting systemic oppression and police brutality against Black people and ethnic minorities.

‘Change the Whirled’ will support the work of Know Your Rights Camp, founded by Kaepernick in 2016 to support the liberation and well-being of Black and Brown communities.

The Camp’s curriculum is designed around 10 points dictating that Black and Brown people should be free, healthy, brilliant, safe, loved, courageous, alive, trusted, educated and know their rights.

Colin Kaepernick and Black Lives Matter

The NFL star really began his activism in 2016 when he chose to kneel for the US national anthem instead of standing as expected. His decision not to stand rocked the world and became known as a symbol of protest against the rampant racial injustice and systemic oppression in the country.

As an internationally recognised voice in the struggle for racial justice, Kaepernick was the obvious choice for such an important collaboration.

In a statement sent to Vegan Food and Living, Kaepernick commented: “I’m honoured to partner with Ben & Jerry’s on Change the Whirled. Their commitment to challenging the anti-Black roots of policing in the United States demonstrates a material concern for the wellbeing of Black and Brown communities.

“My hope is that this partnership will amplify calls to defund and abolish the police and to invest in futures that can make us safer, healthier, and truly free.”

‘Diversify our flavour portfolio’

“Ben & Jerry’s is proud to diversify our flavour portfolio by honouring Kaepernick with a full-time flavour.

“We deeply respect how Colin uses his voice to protest racism, white supremacy and police violence through the belief that ‘love is at the root of our resistance. We have tremendous hope in what we can accomplish together.” Said Matthew McCarthy, CEO of Ben & Jerry’s.

Ben & Jerry’s hope to sweeten the long struggle for justice, and help to make the activist’s vision a reality to really Change the Whirled.

Change the Whirled will be available in the US at the start of 2021, rolling out to the UK, Germany, the Netherlands and Australia in April 2021.
