Clueless star and long-time vegan celebrity Alicia Silverstone has stripped naked to promote vegan fashion.

The acclaimed actor and vegan advocate is the face of PETA’s latest campaign to urge people to choose innovative faux-leathers made from cactus, apples, or mushrooms, instead of animal skin.

Donning just a pair of cowboy boots, Silverstone is pictured in the nude with the slogan ‘Don’t be a p***k. Wear vegan’.

The striking image will appear on a billboard in New York’s Time Square.

“I never, ever, get naked in TV, in film, nothin’ … But I’ve done it for PETA ’cause that’s how much it matters to me,” the star told the charity.

“The amount of resources, water, food, oil for transport, the amount of energy that goes into making leather is extraordinary. It’s just not sustainable. The Earth can’t handle it.”

The true cost of animal leather

PETA points out how cow leather has almost 10 times the negative environmental impact of plant-based alternatives.

“Up to 80 percent of deforestation in the Amazon rainforest has been caused by the destruction of land in order to raise animals, and 130 different chemicals, including cyanide, are used to turn their skin into leather,” the organisation wrote.

“Many of the millions of cows killed for leather endure castration, branding, and tail-docking – all without painkillers – and at slaughterhouses, animals are sometimes skinned while they’re still conscious.”

According to Alicia, being vegan is the “best thing that ever happened to me”. Find out why in our exclusive interview
