Adidas has teamed up with American sneaker designer and Round Two co-founder Sean Wotherspoon to release new eco-friendly vegan Superstar sneakers made from upcycled fabrics

Sportswear giant Adidas has teamed up with American sneaker designer and Round Two co-founder Sean Wotherspoon, who is a proud vegan, to create an eye-catching pair of vegan sneakers in a bid to cut plastic.

The new Sean Wotherspoon x Adidas Superstar collaboration, which has been named “SUPEREARTH”, sees Wotherspoon apply his “love of unique materials, rainbow color schemes, and environmentalism to the legacy silhouette.”

In an interview with Complex teasing details of the sneakers earlier this year, Wotherspoon said that partnering Adidas would put an emphasis on his passion for sustainability and eco-friendly materials.

“It’s going to be a huge step forward in sustainability and a lot different than what you have seen from me in the past as far as materials,” Wotherspoon told Complex.

Vegan leather

Adidas has been on a mission to cut down on plastic waste and ditch animal-derived materials from its designs launching vegan versions of its designs as well as teaming up with vegetarian fashion designer Stella McCartney to launch vegan Stan Smiths and shoes made from ocean plastic.

The new SUPEREARTH sneakers are made from vegan leather with baby blue accents on the lacestays and a textured and perforated tongue that features Wotherspoon’s signature.

Perhaps the most distinctive part of the design is the bright and bold embroidered flowers which adorn the shoe with streams of colourful embroidered threads give the sides of the shoes a graffiti-inspired fringe effect.

In a bid to lower the carbon footprint of the shoes, Adidas has used a natural cork insole which is naturally absorbent and recycled rubber to make them comfortable to wear.

To make it clear that the shoes have been designed with sustainability in mind, the tag on the inside of the tongue reads: “The truth is that this shoe alone will not save the planet. However, we challenged our creation process to find more sustainable solutions. Consider this a commitment for continuous innovation in the field of sustainability.”

Announcing the news on Instagram, Adidas wrote: “In our effort to support our sustainability mission to end plastic waste, we’ve partnered with sean_wotherspoon for SuperEarth.

“Committing together to a more sustainable world, one shoe at a time”

The shoes will be available to purchase on Adidas’ site and select retailers from August 29
