Most famous for its Southern Fried Fricken, Junk It Up Newcastle offers vegan ‘fast food with attitude’ to eat in, take away or have delivered to various Newcastle postcodes.
The eatery makes kebabs, pizzas, onion rings and fries in typical junk-food-style buckets and boxes. Their Southern Fried Fricken is soy based, with a crispy coating of herbs and spices.
Junk It Up is a great place for sharing, socializing and introducing non-vegan friends to the wonders of plant-based junk food.
It was founded after owner and vegan Vicky Tate found herself craving junk food she couldn’t have. She told The Chronicle: ‘Walking past a KFC, or a kebab shop, I’d think wouldn’t it be amazing to have a vegan version of that type of food.’
She continued: ‘It’s definitely high on the list of things vegans miss. Who doesn’t want a kebab, burger or pizza after a night out, or sat in front of the TV on a Saturday night? We wanted to break away from the stereotype that vegans just eat salads.’
The business at Junk It Up is booming as customers discover that the plant-based junk foods taste just as good as meaty dishes. Tate said she would love for the business to expand, and is greatly encouraged by the fact that Junk It Up can now deliver.
She said: ‘We have so many regular customers, and new people coming all the time who can’t get over how good the food tastes. There’s also an excitement about having food that you thought you’d never have again. We love seeing people’s faces when they eat with us for the first time.’
