A new documentary entitled Meat: A Threat to Our Planet? that explores the impact of meat on the environment will air on BBC One tonight.
Climate change is a hot topic right now, and the BBC is set to investigate one of the leading causes in a brand new documentary set to air on BBC One tonight (Monday 25th November).
In the new programme, science and wildlife presenter Liz Bonnin, who featured in the award-winning Drowning In Plastic documnetary in 2018, travels around the world to “investigate the impact that our hunger for meat is having on our planet’s environment.”
Reports from the IPCC and the FAO have revealed that the global livestock industry is responsible for more greenhouse gas emissions than the running of all the world’s transport combined, and the programme will explore just how bad the issue is and whether there is anything we can do to solve it.
According to the programme description, presenter Liz “travels from Texan megafarms, where 50,000 cows belch out vast amounts of planet-warming methane, to giant pig farms producing colossal quantities of polluting manure.
“In the Amazon rainforest she discovers how beef farming is a leading cause of deforestation, and comes face to face with a baby harpy eagle – a species rapidly losing its habitat as cattle farmers cut down the forest. Feeding our planet’s livestock is also leading to huge biodiversity loss and, in South Africa, Liz discovers how this is affecting life in our oceans, helping to drive the African penguin towards extinction.”
The documentary will also see Liz meet “scientists and entrepreneurs urgently looking for solutions” as well as becoming one of the first people in the world to try an innovative new product that may help to reduce the environmental damage done by the meat industry, lab-grown meat.
Vegans be warned, the programme will also show the presenter putting “her hand directly into the stomach of a cow” as part of an experiment to reduce methane emissions. The documentary will also feature a farm in Wales which has taken the “bold step of slaughtering their own animals.”
Meat: A Threat To Our Planet? will air on BBC One at 9pm Monday 25th November.
