A 22-year-old university graduate has opened a takeaway specialising in plant-based and entirely gluten-free food in Padbury, Buckinghamshire.

Chelsea Taylor, the founder of Vego Foods, was inspired to launch the takeaway while studying in Brighton. She noticed the popularity of ethical and vegan tasty food and decided to bring it back to Buckinghamshire.

She told The Bucks Herald: ‘There was a vegan food service in Brighton which was very successful. My university course helped me to understand the ethical side so I set up Vego with the mission to make ethical, nutritional and tasty food that is accessible to all. When I returned to Buckingham I saw there was a gap in the market and decided to set one up here.’

Taylor cooks all of the food at Vego Foods herself, with the help of ‘a couple of guys’ who handle deliveries.

Recently, she also set up a pop-up dinner at Twigs Nurseries, where she served up her autumn menu. The seasonal menu includes tomato and basil bruschetta, battered cauliflower ‘wings’, vegan burgers and Thai red curry. For dessert, a dairy-free chocolate fudge cake was a popular choice. She also gave customers a chance to try her classic dishes like vegan fish and chips, vegan ‘chickon’ and a meatless and gluten-free Sunday roast.

After the event, she said: ‘We were astonished and amazed at the turn out. It was far bigger than we ever expected. However, due to the incredible support, we completely sold out of dishes and packaging before 3pm.’

The takeaway packaging for the food aims to be as environmentally friendly as possible. Taylor explained: ‘Our dishes are not only made from the earth but returned to the earth because our packaging is 100% compostable.’
