Taking your child for a haircut is not always an easy or enjoyable experience, but a brand new spa and hairdressers has opened its doors on Islington Row near Five Ways island in Birmingham to give parents looking for a place where children can enjoy a spot of vegan-friendly pampering a place to go.

The Lion’s Zen is a salon specifically designed with children in mind and boasts a room filled with pink with flowers, balloons and a dressing-up area where children can relax and enjoy letting their imaginations run wild.

There’s also a jungled-themed hairdressing salon upstairs where little ones can have their luscious locks trimmed on a lion, zebra or elephant chair to make the experience less stressful. For anyone who is particularly nervous about their haircut, the salon also offers the choice of having your hair cut in a ball pit to ease their nerves.

Treatments

The salon also offers a range of spa treatments for both parents and children so they can enjoy a spot of pampering together, and everything used in the salon is vegan and made with natural ingredients ensuring they are safe for delicate skin. The Lion’s Zen also offers bespoke Daddy and Daughter packages for those looking for a spot of family bonding.

Customers can treat themselves to a manicure with water-based nail varnishes or a face mask made from fresh strawberries. Even the towels used for the treatments are biodegradable to ensure the salon is as eco-friendly as possible.

Speaking about what motivated her to open the salon, owner Vicky Foster told Birmingham Live: “I have two boys and they literally hated going to the barbers. I don’t have a business degree or anything, but because they hated it so much and got so much anxiety around going to the hairdressers, I just thought ‘why don’t I create somewhere where children will enjoy going?”

Eco-friendly

Being eco-friendly and vegan is important to Foster, who was inspired to create a jungle theme in keeping with the salon’s eco-friendly credentials. Foster explained: “I knew that I wanted to go with a jungle theme to tie in with the ethos. Books we’ve got are all about the planet and animals.

“If it helps animals and helps awareness then we’re all for it, for example all the towels we use are eco-friendly and 100 per cent compostable – each towel gets thrown after every wash it just decomposes when it hits recycling or landfill.

“I just thought why not make these changes for the planet. We’re a children-led service so why not make the planet better for them? I’m just really careful about what products we use.”

The Lion’s Zen will host its grand opening on October 26th with a fancy dress competition, games, face painting as well as discounted treatments.
